Nednak Cup Finals 24 November 2012
What a day of football it was for the Mpumalanga Provincial SAFA 2nd Division Nedbank Cup finals that took place over this past weekend at Mhluzi Stadium in Middelburg. A rainy thriller-filled day though, it was entertaining indeed! For record, this was Mbombela’s second visit to Mhluzi Stadium after having trounced local team Mhluzi Black Rangers F.C 5-1 two weeks ago where Tingwenyama won the local support after displaying its trademark entertaining style of play, “the Espanola.”
These provincial finals were contested by the winners of each region which were Mbombela United F.C who trounced Amazayoni F.C 2-0 proceeding to the finals scheduled for the very afternoon and Batau F.C who knocked out Phiva All Stars F.C 5-3 on penalties during a 1 all draw after full time. The final match between once again pitched the two teams that tightly contested for the league honours last season with Batau F.C edging Mbombela to qualify for the 2011/12 national play-offs. Tingwenyama still had a score to settle and what a better stage it was; a national Nedbank Knockout Competition.
Teenager Ronaldo Ndlovu was no doubt the best player of the semi-final game between Mbombela and Amazayoni F.C. He toyed with the Amazayoni defenders throughout the match showcasing his ‘shibobos and tsamaya’ skills and it came as no surprise when he was hacked down in the penalty area to win Mbombela a penalty which was exquisitely converted by Ntokozo ‘TK’ Myeni to give Tingwenyama a 1-0 lead into half time. Another player that combined well with Ronaldo causing havoc to the Amazayoni defence capped his classy performance with a stunner that gave the Amazayoni keeper no chance, to easily hand over Mbombela a deserved 2-0 win.
The second game saw Phiva F.C take on Batau F.C in a lacklustre match that was dominated by Batau who outclassed and led Phiva 1-0 for the better three quarters of the match. Realising that their survival in the competition was at stake, Phiva started mounting purposeful attacks that resulted in a penalty being awarded after a Batau defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area after a barrage of attacks that were mounted by the former. The penalty was converted thus changing the complex and pace of the game with 15 minutes of the game still remaining. At this stage it was anybody’s game although Phiva had clear-cut scoring chances that were squandered by their forwards.
The match had to be settled on a penalty shoot-out which was eventually won by Batau F.C to set the stage for a titanic clash that was deservedly won by Mbombela. The youthful Mbombela rear-guard of keeper Maponyane, Eshwell, Dingaan, Vum-vum and Victor kept the opponent attackers at bay with captain Mpela launching the midfield attack with the assistance of Jhwaah, Master and Nguru who played both matches. Strikers Inky Masuku and Ningiza never gave Batau’s defence any room to breathe. Substitutes Innocent, Figo and Tshwarelo lifted the pace of the match and kept mounting and waging attack-after-attack besieging Batau’s goal area at will with impunity. ‘Master’ saw his thunderous-bolt strike hit the cross-bar in the 80th minute. It was clear that the game would have to be settled on penalties and the odds favoured Tingwenyama in case it came to that scenario.
Tingwenyama won the match 4-2 on penalties after striker Inky, defender Vum-vum, ‘keeper Maponyane and sweeper Victor Shongwe all converted.
